It came as no surprise to many commentators that the Severn River tidal scheme was axed today – just 3 days before the Comprehensive Spending Review.

Instead the Coalition Government plans to initiate another batch of nuclear power stations and to further promote renewables.

Chris Huhne said in his statement

The Government believes that other options, such as the expansion of wind energy, carbon capture and storage and nuclear power, represent a better deal for taxpayers and consumers at this time.

Let us hope the message on wind energy makes it all the way down to regional planning authorities as the planning system still presents a major obstacle to many schemes.
